Chronic ankle instability
Chronic ankle instability
An ankle that keeps giving way usually traces back to a sprain that healed loose, and every repeat sprain does a little more damage to the joint surface. Rebuilding the stability is what prevents arthritis later.
What's Involved
- Stability testing — Examination of the lateral ligaments and assessment of proprioception.
- Imaging — X-ray and ultrasound to rule out fracture and grade ligament damage.
- Rehabilitation or repair — Bracing and balance training first, ligament reconstruction if it fails.
When to Come In
- Repeated rolling — Turning the ankle on uneven ground or even flat surfaces.
- A feeling of giving way — Lack of confidence on stairs, kerbs, or slopes.
- Persistent swelling — An ankle that never fully settles between episodes.
