Hammertoe correction
Hammertoe correction
A hammertoe starts flexible and gradually becomes rigid, and the treatment options narrow as it does. Caught while it still straightens, it can often be managed without surgery.
What's Involved
- Flexibility assessment — Establishing whether the deformity is still correctable by hand.
- Conservative care — Padding, toe spacers, and footwear or orthotic changes to relieve pressure.
- Surgical correction — Tendon release or joint realignment for rigid, painful toes.
When to Come In
- A toe bending at the middle joint — A visible claw or hammer shape.
- Corns on top of the toe — Pressure lesions where the toe rubs the shoe.
- Pain under the ball of the foot — Load transferring forward as the toe lifts.
