Kidney screening

Kidney screening

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, and kidney damage progresses silently for years. Two simple tests detect it early enough that treatment can slow or halt it.

What's Involved

  • Urine albumin testing — The earliest detectable sign of diabetic kidney damage.
  • Blood testing — eGFR and creatinine to measure how well the kidneys are filtering.
  • Protective treatment — Blood pressure and medication changes proven to slow progression.

When to Come In

  • Annual screening — Recommended every year for everyone with diabetes.
  • High blood pressure — Which both causes and results from kidney damage.
  • Swelling or frothy urine — Later signs that should be assessed promptly.
