Morton's neuroma
Morton's neuroma
A neuroma is a thickened nerve between the toes, usually the third and fourth, and it produces a distinctive burning or a sense of standing on a pebble. Most cases respond well without surgery when they are addressed early.
What's Involved
- Clinical examination — Compression testing to reproduce the symptom and localise the nerve.
- Ultrasound imaging — On-site imaging to confirm the neuroma and measure it.
- Non-surgical treatment — Offloading padding, orthotics, and injection therapy before surgery is considered.
When to Come In
- Burning between the toes — Pain radiating forward into the third and fourth toes.
- A pebble in the shoe sensation — Feeling something under the ball of the foot that is not there.
- Relief when you take your shoe off — Symptoms that ease as soon as pressure is removed.
