Pelvic congestion syndrome

Pelvic congestion syndrome is chronic pelvic pain caused by varicose veins inside the pelvis, and it is commonly missed for years. It is diagnosable with imaging and treatable through the same catheter techniques used for leg veins.

What's Involved

  • Imaging — Pelvic ultrasound and venography to identify the refluxing pelvic veins.
  • Embolisation — Closure of the affected veins through a small catheter puncture.
  • Coordinated care — Working alongside your gynaecologist where other causes are also being managed.

When to Come In

  • Chronic pelvic ache — Pain lasting more than six months, worse on standing.
  • Worse before periods — A cyclical pattern to the pain.
  • Visible vulvar or thigh veins — Varicosities in an unusual distribution.
