Shin splints
Shin splints
Shin splints are an overload injury, and they almost always trace back to foot mechanics, training load, or footwear. Treating the shin alone tends to fail; treating the cause does not.
What's Involved
- Differential diagnosis — Ruling out stress fracture and compartment syndrome, which present similarly.
- Gait and mechanics review — Identifying the overpronation or load pattern driving the strain.
- Correction — Orthotic support, training modification, and a graded return to activity.
When to Come In
- Aching along the inner shin — Pain over the lower two thirds of the tibia.
- Worse at the start of exercise — Discomfort that eases then returns afterwards.
- Recent training change — New surface, new shoes, or a jump in mileage.
