Tarsal tunnel syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is nerve compression at the inside of the ankle, the foot's equivalent of carpal tunnel. It is frequently mistaken for plantar fasciitis, and treating it as fasciitis does not help.

What's Involved

  • Nerve examination — Percussion and compression testing along the tibial nerve.
  • Imaging — Ultrasound to identify a ganglion, varicosity, or other space-occupying cause.
  • Treatment — Orthotic control, injection, or release depending on the cause and severity.

When to Come In

  • Burning or tingling in the sole — Symptoms radiating into the arch and toes.
  • Worse at night — Discomfort that wakes you or is worst when resting.
  • Heel pain that is not fasciitis — Pain that has not responded to fasciitis treatment.
