Uterine fibroid embolization
Uterine fibroid embolization
Uterine fibroid embolisation treats fibroids by cutting off their blood supply through a catheter, with no incision and no hysterectomy. It is done under sedation and most patients go home the same day.
What's Involved
- Imaging assessment — MRI or ultrasound to confirm size, number, and position of the fibroids.
- Catheter procedure — Tiny particles delivered through a wrist or groin puncture to block fibroid blood flow.
- Recovery and follow-up — A short recovery period with imaging to confirm the fibroids have shrunk.
When to Come In
- Heavy or prolonged periods — Bleeding severe enough to cause anaemia.
- Pelvic pressure or bloating — Bulk symptoms including urinary frequency.
- Wanting to avoid hysterectomy — A uterus-sparing alternative to surgery.
