Uterine fibroid embolization

Uterine fibroid embolization

Uterine fibroid embolisation treats fibroids by cutting off their blood supply through a catheter, with no incision and no hysterectomy. It is done under sedation and most patients go home the same day.

What's Involved

  • Imaging assessment — MRI or ultrasound to confirm size, number, and position of the fibroids.
  • Catheter procedure — Tiny particles delivered through a wrist or groin puncture to block fibroid blood flow.
  • Recovery and follow-up — A short recovery period with imaging to confirm the fibroids have shrunk.

When to Come In

  • Heavy or prolonged periods — Bleeding severe enough to cause anaemia.
  • Pelvic pressure or bloating — Bulk symptoms including urinary frequency.
  • Wanting to avoid hysterectomy — A uterus-sparing alternative to surgery.
